Tips for a Successful Quit-Smoking Resolution

Quitting smoking is consistently among the most popular New Year’s resolutions. It’s also one of the hardest to achieve due to the hyper-addictive nature of nicotine. So, what steps can you take to make your quit attempt a success?

First and foremost, going cold turkey or attempting to quit through will power alone will set you up for failure. Instead, talk to your healthcare provider, utilize free resources and consider trying some of the readily available medications that can make quitting easier. In fact, working with a doctor or tobacco cessation specialist is one of the most proven ways to quit smoking. Research overwhelmingly shows that a five minute conversation with a provider can double a person’s chance of quitting successfully. Follow-up counseling can increase those chances another 20 percent, and when combined with a medication, it jumps by an additional 30 percent. For doctors or other healthcare specialists reading this: Talk to your patients. For a variety of reasons, be it pride or anxiety, people may not feel comfortable asking for help; when a provider initiates the conversation, it makes a big difference.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, medications can help manage nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Currently, there are seven medicines approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Some are available over-the-counter, while others, like nasal sprays and pills, require a prescription — underscoring why those conversations with providers are so important.

Finally, be sure to learn about and use public resources like the NYS Quitline. The Quitline provides patches, gum and lozenges at no cost; it also connects people with personal quit coaches who can provide support and tips. To learn more, visit nysmokefree.com or call 1-866-NY-Quits.

Quitting smoking is hard work. If you resolved to kick the habit in 2026, remember that you don’t have to go it alone. Take advantage of free support and talk to your provider — it works!
