Healthy People 2010 Goal
“Increase to 75%… primary care and oral health care providers who routinely advise cessation and provide assistance and follow up for all their tobacco-using patients.”
Why is it important?
- Smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in the United States.
- Secondhand smoke causes premature death and disease in children and in adults who do not smoke.
- Patients who receive tobacco cessation interventions from a physcian or non-physician clinician are 2.2 and 1.7 times, respectively, more likely to quit at > 5 months.
- 70% of adult smokers want to quit; 40% make a serious quit attempt each year, yet, fewer than 5% succeed.
