Students at Davis Elementary School in Malone returned to school this fall to find a colorful new hallway.
The sensory path at Davis Elementary was installed by Occupational Therapist Liane Eggleston. The North Country Healthy Heart Network’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC) program is working with area schools to replicate the project.
“These paths have become increasingly popular in schools over the last couple of years,” explained Kat Haney, the Heart Network’s CHSC school coordinator. “They’ve been found to help students develop motor skills such as balance, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness.
“They also serve as a ‘brain breaks’ to help increase blood flow through the body, which can help with student focus and learning,” Haney added.
Haney noted that there is an uptick in schools designing these elements.
