Meet Bethany Perry, a 5th grade teacher from Davis Elementary in Malone. She is just one of 10 School Project Advisors (SPAs) recruited by the Healthy Heart Network to act as a champion for her school. Our SPAs are an integral part of Creating Healthy Schools and Communities in that they help to provide insight into each building’s unique culture. The more we know about a school community, the better we can assist them in creating goals that are relevant to their own specific needs. We asked Bethany a few questions regarding her decision to get involved with this grant.
Why did you choose to take on this position?
I am interested in seeking out ways to keep kids healthy. We sit so much during the day and want to find ways to keep them moving. I also wanted to encourage myself to make better choices.
What kinds of opportunities would you like to see happen during this grant?
I’d like to see increased awareness and knowledge within the school about what is available for resources and to help make the healthy choices more appealing.
What is something positive that is happening in your school already that you would like see grow even more?
There is already a general consensus among many teachers that kids are sitting for too long and that we would like to find ways to remedy this.
What is your favorite physical activity to do on your spare time?
I really enjoy going for a walk on a nice day and snowshoeing when the winter allows it.
